Party Monster, the original documentary directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, tells the story of the rise and fall of Michael Alig. A kid from Middle America who aspired to be the next Andy Warhol, Michael quickly rose to become the biggest party promoter in New York City, and King of the so-called Club Kids. Alig created his own reality—a “surreality”—one without rules. But the charming freedom of this world eventually mutated into something darker, where getting away with murder would prove to be the ultimate thrill. After spiraling into drug addiction, Michael brutally murdered his roommate Angel Melendez and was sent to prison for 17 years. Alig was released from prison this year on May 5th, 2014 and is back in New York, living on parole.
After its release to critical acclaim in 1998, Party Monster won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in News and Documentary Program, and was an official selection for the Sundance Film Festival. The Club Kid documentary Party Monster was later reworked into a cult movie of the same name starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green, written, directed and produced by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, and co produced by World of Wonder and Killer Films. The 2003 film was based on the memoir Disco Bloodbath by Club Kid James St. James.
