So Lady Gaga wore a black beaded harness bra and heart-shaped pasties with a full fuchsia skirt as she exited Le Bristol Hotel in Paris to take her pet dog Asia for a walk. And…. how do we feel about that? Pics and an exhaustive discussion after the jump.
On the one hand, it raises interesting questions about the semiotics and symbology of fashion and its utilitarian applications in everyday life – I mean, let’s be real, how much NEED for fashion is there REALLY in your day-to-day life and WHY SHOULDN”T one wear a pink ballgown to walk the dog? How is that any different than, say, a pretty hair bow or an arm full of bangles? It’s the 21st century and the need for “work clothes” versus “party clothes” has all but evaporated. It’s all just tradition at this point, isn’t it? And it’s just as easy to blog in a ballgown as it is a pair of dungarees. That Mother Monster wears high fashion for common, every day events, and jarringly inappropriate outfits to high fashion events is rebellious and fun and waggishly puts fashionistas in their place BUT….
Doesn’t it all feel a bit cold and calculated? I mean: She’s not REALLY a dotty eccentric along the lines of the Marchesa Casati or Isabella Blow, now, is she? She doesn’t just throw on whatever’s in her closet, then wander around in a fog, unaware that she is sartorially out of step with the rest of society. It’s not an organic sort of nuttiness, is it? If she was doing a fashion shoot or was getting ready for a party, and the dog needed to go out so she dropped everything and took him out in her ballgown, that would be one thing. But the fact that she cynically opted to put on a hot pink gown to walk the dog (and get some press) is just tiresome beyond tiresome at this point.
