I saw this picture on the news wire and posted it on Facebook, as I sometimes do, and it’s garnered a lot of responses, mostly positive. This is 60s sex symbol, Rachel Welch, who is now 74. She always looks great but over the years, she’s been kind of age-defying (and plastic surgery denying. She’s never admitted to any… but you know, those magicians won’t tell you how trick is done either.) Whatever you do to look good, I think, is fine. What’s the difference between using face creams, injectables or have full on surgery? It’s YOUR face and body. And if your business is your looks, and you let them go, then you effectively go out of business. Someone commented; “She looks silly for her age” and my response was “What’s she supposed to look like? Grey hair, a cardigan with Mom jeans?” By Hollywood standards, she’s holding her own in the glam dept. She sells her own line of wigs, btw, and if this is one, I’ll bet women (and drag queens alike) have made her wealthy, cause this looks pretty great.
Another age defyer is Jane Fonda who is 76 and always looks amazing to me. Age appropriate and yet, totally not disappointing if you want to see a legend. And she’s been SO much more than a sex symbol over the years that her looks are surely the least interesting aspect of this woman who has seemingly done it all. She started out as Barbarella (just as Raquel had her 1 Million Years BC look, above) and went on to Hanoi Jane, Workout Jane, Mrs. Ted Turner, Hollywood comeback and now she seems her free-est and happiest ever. However you choose to look is your business, but if you’re in the business of show, you can be sure, we are all going to say what we think about it. Much has been said about “enhancing” one’s own looks but, as it’s been quoted often, and I’ll do it again here, Ru said it best;
“We all came into this world naked. The rest is all drag.” –RuPaul
When Tom Petty was turning 60, a reporter asked him how he felt about it and he said;
“If you aren’t getting older, you’re dead.”
There’s no other option, it seems, so you might as well fight gravity to the grave. (Photos, Pacific Coast News)
