Of course you’re following the Franco scandal, right? In which the 30-something hunk was all up in some young girl’s gig, trying to book a hotel room to make sweet, sweet love to her, but talking to her VIA INSTAGRAM? Well, I’m calling it right here, right now: It’s a hoax.
Read the particulars here.
Here’s the thing, though: I find it hard to believe that JAMES FRANCO – who was savvy enough to ask the girl to tag the video so he could then track her to Instagram – was stupid enough to conduct the conversation in front of his 1,630,085 followers and NOT EXPECT to get a reaction. The fact that he did it on the day his Palo Alto trailer premiered (in which he plays a predatory teacher coming on to a 17-year-old student), makes me think this is some sort of weird performance art piece (a la Joaquin Phoenix or Chris Gaines). He’s becoming the character to promote the movie.
Even his confession today on Kelly & Michael seems off. Right off the bat, he acknowledged and sheepishly apologized for the incident.
“I was feeling awkward — I didn’t want to come on the show and just feel awkward,” he said. “I’m embarrassed, and I guess I’m just a model of how social media is tricky. It’s a way that people meet each other today, but what I’ve learned — I guess because I’m new to it — is you don’t know who’s on the other end. You get a feel for them, you don’t know who you’re talking to. I used bad judgment and I learned my lesson.”
“Unfortunately, in my position — I mean, I have a very good life, but not only do I have to go through the embarrassing kind of rituals of meeting someone, but if I do that, then it gets published for the world. So now, it’s double-embarrassing.”
But it just seems OFF. Wrong. Rehearsed. Weird. Not him. Watch it here and decide for yourself:
Although… the more I think about it, it seems strange that Kelly & Michael would be a party to this weird performance art piece. “Whooo-hoo! A statutory rape hoax! How can we get in on this?” So, I don’t know.
