In the new movie Boy Next Door, the boy next door (played by Ryan Guzman) tries to woo Jennifer Lopez by presenting her with a “first edition copy of The Iliad,” which he found for a buck at a garage sale. She’s tickled, naturally. Who wouldn’t be? The Iliad is a 3,000-year-old epic poem that only existed in oral tradition until the 10th century, when it was written down in the ancient Greek manuscript Marcianus Graecus Z, and whose first edition likely came after the invention of the printing press in 1439. To find it for a BUCK at a GARAGE SALE would, indeed, be the discovery of a lifetime. Certainly worth the fuck she’s going to give him for it.
Seriously, though. At no point did ANYONE on the set think to themselves maybe we should change this to a Hemingway first edition? Or something SLIGHTLY more plausible? An Iliad first edition. SMH. Hollywood is full of idiots.
