“This has been the year of everything,” actor David Burtka says of the past 12 months with his husband, actor Neil Patrick Harris. After Harris wrapped the hit, How I Met Your Mother, earned a Tony for his role Hedwig on Broadway they settling into this townhouse they spent over a year renovating. (They also have twins and got married this past September!) Burke is about to star on Broadway himself, Harris is developing a variety show for NBC, expected later this year… and in a week NPH will host this year’s Oscars. Once HIMYM entered its final season in the fall of 2013, their search for a New York home heated up. They had kept an aptartment in Harlem, while living in LA, and they looked at places all over the city, they ended up staying in the neighborhood. The five-story, late-19th-century townhouse, needed a bit of structural work but it had tons of character and had a street-level space for Harris’s production-company offices and a screening room.
It looks pretty sweet, but personally, I don’t like brownstone living that much. I had one in Brooklyn for a dozen years or so and it seems glam to have all these floors, but it’s WAY too much up and down. Wherever you are, the thing you need on on another floor. Maybe it’s good when you have kids, though, everyone gets LOTS of exercise and I’ll bet they have one thing or two things that that we didn’t. An elevator and live-in help.
