Brit wit Stephen Fry, who just married Elliot Spencer, said on The Jonathan Ross Show last week that Queen Elizabeth II had expressed approval when signing the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act in July 2013:
“It was only last summer that Her Majesty The Queen gave the Royal Assent. When the Queen signed the Royal Assent for the equal marriages act, allowing gay people to marry for the first time, she put it down and said, ‘Well, who’d have thought 62 years ago when I came to the throne, I’d be signing something like this? Isn’t it wonderful?'”
Fry said he was not positive the story was true – but then said it was “well founded.” He went on:
“I am so proud to live in the country where [acceptance] seems to be the absolute majority view.”
According to tradition and policy, the Queen must remain politically neutral and has never spoken publicly about gay marriage,… but let’s just say this Queen is cool with it. Don’t you think she would be?
