Did you know that there are 34 governments in Europe that still force transgender people to undergo sterilization, divorce, and/or a diagnosis of mental illness to be allowed to change their name or gender? Transgender Europe (TGEU.org) has a new video showing that for most trans people in Europe, it is very difficult and often incredibly humiliating to get a passport other identity documents with their correct name and gender. In fact, 34 countries in Europe still do not allow a trans person to change their name and registered gender without invasive and abusive requirements that violate their human rights.
The 34 countries in question are: Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. (The UK, really?)
In addition, there are 14 countries in Europe that do not have any laws at all to allow a change of name and gender.
