On the one hand: What a play! What a role! Crumbling matriarch/morphine addict Mary Tyrone is ONE FOR THE AGES and perfect for Jessica’s penchant for over-the-top Grand Guignol types. It was a tour de force for Katherine Hepburn in the 1962 movie (directed by a young Sydney Lumet – a MUST-SEE for its master-class on camp). Jessica would well be on her way to that EGOT with this role under belt.

On the other hand: Ryan Murphy? Getting his hands on Eugene O’Neill? Oh dear. Ryan is – at BEST – an unfocused hack with too many ideas and no one to rein him in. At worst, he’s an egomaniacal monster with the emotional depth of Koko the Gorilla, and a penchant for ultimately destroying the worlds he creates. This could be a disaster of biblical proportions.

But we shall see.

Says Entertainment Weekly of the just-announced venture:

The partnership of Jessica Lange and Ryan Murphy is continuing on the Broadway stage.

Lange will make her long-rumored return to Broadway in a new production of Eugene O’Neill’s masterpiece Long Day’s Journey Into Night, produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company in association with Murphy. The play begins previews on March 31, 2016, in anticipation of an official opening night on April 19 at the American Airlines Theatre.

Lange will be joined by Tony nominee Gabriel Byrne (as James) and Tony winner John Gallagher Jr. (as Edmond) in the Jonathan Kent-directed engagement.

Watch Katherine’s take on the character below, and Netflix that shit ASAP.
