In Paris earlier this week, Vampire Diaries hunk Ian Somerhalder and his new wife Nikki Reed were besieged by fans as they left their hotel. Somerhalder shook some of their hands, but when one tried to take a photo with him, he quickly shot them down.
“Hey guys, listen,” he announced to the crowd of waiting fans. “No, no. Stop. Everybody listen. I love you guys, but I’m not taking a single photo today. It’s my day. Don’t follow us, please. I love you, guys. You’re so good to us. You’re so awesome.”
“Just one?” asked a superfan. “One PLEASE?”
“It’s never just one,” he said firmly, and continued moving through the crowd.
The girl burst into tears, but Somerhalder was not to be deterred. “Don’t follow us please. It’s too much.”
And he left.
Watch it below.
What do you think? Was he rude? Should he have stopped for a few minutes and honored the requests of fans who had waited hours to see him? Or was he well within his rights to say no and simply have a day to himself? What DO stars owe their fans?
Commenters are divided: “He will spend the rest of his life with his wife,” writes one, “it’s not like it’s their last day together. He could’ve been smart about it and took a photo. The girl must have waited years to meet him, and he made her cry. Fans are not dogs, and I get it he has a life, but he could’ve still taken photos instead of telling them off. I find it irrelevant. He doesn’t waste a second by scaring fans off everyday.”
“Ian was incredibly reasonable!” writes another. “People get far to crazy as fans and can’t see these people as human beings. He and Nikki have been abused by the media and all the negative press. They just want peace! People need to respect them and honor their wishes. He does so much for his fans and the community and environment. Pulled in such a multitude of directions, I doubt any one of us could handle it better or with such grace. The tears and beggings are a show of instability not love. Infatuation and not respect. I’m glad to see him set boundaries and applaud his standing firm.”
I can’t decide. He didn’t strike me as rude, just a bit inflexible. Maybe he could have had the concierge or whoever take one quick group photo with them that could be posted onto instagram and be done with it. I get that it’s never just one, but as a star he sort of owes his fans SOMETHING. Doesn’t he?
