The City Museum in St. Louis is a 600,000 square-foot, 10-story building that was once the home of the International Shoe Company. It’s the brainchild of artist and sculptor Bob Cassilly who opened the space almost 20 years ago. Cassilly passed away in 2011, but the museum is still perpetually under construction and new features are added or upgraded by group of 20 artists known as the “Cassilly Crew“. As you can see it’s a maze with a sky-high jungle gym with not one, but two repurposed airplanes, two 10-story slides, a rooftop Ferris wheel and a school bus that hangs out over the roof. With its subterranean caves, and hundreds of feet of tunnels that go from floor to floor, an aquarium and ball pits, it looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen. It seems endless with it’s in-house circus arts facility, restaurants like The Baby Elephant Cafe and The Rooftop Cantina. All of the materials used to build the museum are salvaged, like bridges, old chimneys, construction cranes, and miles of tile which were, in effect, a massive recycling project.
