Of course, the main attraction (hunk-wise) at the Tony Awards are the Hollywood heavyweights who give the people in Middle America a reason to tune in. This year, the Tonys featured appearances by Bradley Cooper, Nick Jonas, Taye Diggs, and Joe Manganiello – which was all well and good, as they were suitably hunky and made the night fairly fly by. But Broadway is fertile ground for the discovery of new, up-and-coming talent, and very often that talent is of the yummy “hunk-on-the-rise” variety.
In past years, I first discovered Eddie Redmayne, Finn Wittrock (Dandy on American Horror Story: Freakshow) and Billy Magnussen (Into the Woods) before they transitioned to Hollywood stardom.
This year, Alex Sharp won Best Actor in a Play for The Curious Case of the Dog in the Night. It was a spectacular win, not just because he’s 19 year’s old – just one year out of Julliard! – and it was his first profession al gig. What’s really amazing is that he beat out Stephen Boyer, Bradley Cooper (in The Elephant Man), Ben Miles, and Bill Nighy – all veteren actors at the top of their game. Alex acceptance speech was absolutely adorable, and his charisma really shone through. I see big things for this kid. Movies. Oscars. A lifetime of accolades, in fact. That is, unless the CW snatches him up. Please don’t let the CW snatch you up, Alex.
Matthew Beard from Skylight didn’t win, but he’s pretty dreamy with those big cow eyes and insouciant hair.
Speaking of dreamy: Holy crap. Robert Fairchild from An American in Paris. Did you SEE that dance number? My basement was FLOODED. Flooded, I tell you. Dear God in heaven. Whatta man. The ease with which he tossed her around. Can somebody please do that to me? Just once in my life? Sigh.
Then there was that blond sailor, the third to the right, in On the Town, omg. Don’t know anything else about him, but he sure caught my eye. I am IN LOVE.
There was another guy in the audience, sitting with Emily Skuggs from Fun Home, but I couldn’t find a screen grab of him. He was, however, incredibly fine and I just might spend the afternoon hunting him down. Speaking of Fun Home – that song! “Ring of Keys”? About the little girl seeing her first lesbian? Uh. May. Zing. I SOBBED.
Here she is singing it on the Drama Awards earlier this year.
You’re just gutted huh? I remember the first gay man I saw. I remember the electricity I felt. WHAT IS THAT?, I thought. PEOPLE CAN BE LIKE THAT? It was a revelation. I was thunderstruck. Easily the highlight of the show for me.
