Before Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert, and Carrie Underwood, there were the Dixie Chicks AKA The TRUE queens of country feminism.
AND, they JUST announced a summer reunion tour in 2016.
In the late 90’s, there was a lot of girl power happening…
(and I’m not just talking about the leaders of the free world: the Spice Girls).
The pop-country crossover was happening at an accelerated rate due to this:
And in 1998, three country women (from Texas) landed on the pop culture singer-songwriter zeitgeist in a way that no other female country group has before.
The badass grammy-grabbing girls – famous for a laundry list of number ones (and for calling Bush out on his shit) – have had somewhat of a fashion evolution over the years.
Just like anyone, style reflects where we are at in our lives and I think the Dixie Chicks fashion choices over the last two decades argues you that theory perfectly.
1998
Here we are first introduced to these honky tonk legends and their “girl next door” appeal is very on fleek.
I find their fashionably clueless wardrobe BOTH endearing,
but also genius to their craft because there was no flair, thrills, or cheap tricks,
just really great, honest, and well constructed songs about Wide Open Spaces.
1999
(AKA Their Best Dressed Year)
With the release of their groundbreaking Fly,
Natalie, Martie, and Emily crossed over into full fledged pop icons.
Thanks to Destiny’s Child, there was a system set in place for girl groups in the late 90’s: each girl wear a different color and show as much belly as possible.
And when they started winning trophies,
you could see the humor and camp in their clothes.
How To Look Joyful: adorn your head in their hair clips and finish your shoulders off with a crushed velvet shrug.
Belly jewels is a 2 to 1 ratio rule by the way…
Sorry Swift, but these are all the #SquadGoals I need:
Beyond all the tri-color eleganza (and lip gloss),
they continued to remind people that they were more than dumb blondes through their music videos.
They had this perfect way of oscillating between high glam…
(Real HouseWives of Runaway Brides.)
and looking like they lived in Star’s Hollow with Lorelai Gilmore.
Move over Gaga and Lil Kim!
Natalie – clearing being the Beyonce – continued to push her fashion choices in the early 2000’s.
2002
Motherhood was very en vogue in 2003 and all three women were making and having babies.
How to get this look:
snatch a mesh tank, black bra, and low-rise jeans. Oh yeah…
With the release of Home,
the girls were growing up and showing a softer side
compete with clean lines, earth tones, and some boho realness.
2003
In 2003, life coach and boss lady Natalie Maines issued this statement:
“Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas.”
The media and fans backfired in a volatile, harmful, and disgusting way.
With their amazing Not Ready To Make Nice Video, the girls showed their mourning (and how chic and sleek they could clean up).
And they kept showing that mourning in all black.
And more black.
Oh yeah, and did I mention MORE black?
And even in the face of adversity, they looked INCREDIBLE.
Hated by many, but loved by a wider and even more diverse audience now,
they continued winning awards and slaying the red carpet.
With a newly brunette Natalie, the group had won back (and then some!)
They won musically, and they won the runway.
Their fashion game was super fierce too.
2014
Small shout-out to Natalie’s butch femme moment that we are all living (and questioning our sexuality over) for.
2015
They are definitely back and more stunning than ever, today. Grab your tickets for their 2016 reunion tour because you will not want to miss it!
