The Penguin Modern Classics edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – aimed at the adult market  –is being released to mark the book’s 50th anniversary, and the new cover is causing a bit of controversy. On it is a photo of a young girl wearing way too much makeup and looking like a cross between Lolita and JonBenet Ramsey. Is it supposed to be Veruca Salt? Violet Beauregarde? I don’t remember either girl being described as brazen hussies, so what is this all about? Not saying it’s not a fabulous image, it just seems a bit random and pointlessly salacious.

According to the publisher, the unsettling image wasn’t meant to be any specific character but rather a representation of the “twisted” parent-child relationships depicted throughout the book. reflects the way Dahl’s writing “manages to embrace both the light and the dark aspects of life.”

Kind of looks like Alaska, doesn’t it?

Best-selling Chocolat author Joanne Harris tweeted: ‘I’m not sure why adults need a different cover anyway, but who was it who decided that ‘adult’ meant ‘inappropriately sexualised’?’

The cover photograph was taken from a French magazine fashion shoot by the photographers Sofia Sanchez and Mauro Mongiello, entitled “Mommie Dearest.”
