curbed hamptons bingo

If you’re not familiar with the ins and outs, trial and tribulations of dealing with one of the most buzzed about summer destination –it won’t matter at all. You can “relax” by playing the Hamptons‘ newest game, Summer Bingo, which is fun (?) and according to Curbed

“requires fewer horses than polo.”

Just print out the handy game card provided. Get any five in a row, you win a FREE McMansion weekend (sponsored by the Manorville McDonald’s) and a $100 credit at Sagg Main farm stand –which gets you 5 tomatoes, 4 sunflowers and a New York Times) But sorry, the house is north of the highway. If you don’t get any of those bad jokes, then you won’t mind at all. Good luck! (via Curbed)

August 10: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Writer, Mark Doty

doty

August 10, 1953Mark Doty is one of my favorite American poets. Elegant, unflinching, melancholy, his words haunt me. I appreciate the duality of the rural & the urbane in his work. In one poem he describes the plant life of a vacant city lot. As a gay man I have always sought out a life in an urban center while being enchanted by a cabin at the beach. I get that vibe from Doty’s work. I have attempted to take my city lot & make a place for nature, my tiny attempt at living in both worlds. Doty:

 “I’ve always been a poet who wrote about urban life because I love the layers & surprises & the jangly complexities of cities. I feel at home in cities, being a gay man. It’s a place of permission & possibility. In 1990, I moved to Provincetown. I also love this landscape of salt marshes, beaches & dunes, but I had to write about it in a different way. In the marsh, there is no narrative. All that happens is that a bird flies by, the tide comes in & goes out.”

His poetry addresses that push between artifice & the natural:

“I play around with the distinction between art & nature, the real & the false. My experience often feels pretty seamless. I’ve always been drawn to artifice & the beauties of surface and shadings and tone. A lot of the process of development is figuring out how to be all of yourself in a poem. How do you let your love of wigs & make-up, your sense of humor, your anger find its way into the poem?”

Doty’s poetry collections have transported me. But, it is a work of prose that has moved me the most. I read his lovely book Dog Years: A Memoir (2009) in just 2 sittings, ironically taking a break only to walk my dogs. The book is Doty’s meditation on life & loss & the method that grief squeezes into life & never lets go, Doty tells of the life he shared with his 2 dogs as he experiences the decline & death of his longtime partner Wally from HIV, & how the canines move & affect a new relationship with a new love & future spouse.

How many ways have all my dogs had a profound effect on how I have dealt with the heights & valleys of my life & my 36 year relationship with a certain man? The Husband & I have had a dog, usually 2, for nearly all our time together. At one point, I think we stayed a couple because of the dogs. The Husband & I have lived with, loved & buried 4 dogs. Our rescued terriers, Junior & Lulu are dogs 5 & 6. In 2014 we lost 2 canine friends, dogs loved as if they were our own.

In Dog Years, Doty tells of his improbable decision to adopt a dog as a companion for his dying partner. Beau is a large golden retriever, possibly abused & in need of love & companionship. Beau is made part of the family, paired with Arden, their other retriever. Beau responds well to his new life, & bounces back in spirit & body. The 2 dogs become Doty’s best friends, comfort, & the reason to keep going during the worst of days. The retriever’s moxie, loyalty, & affection give him hope when all else fails.

Dog Years is moving & intimate, with profound insight on the life we share with animals & the lessons they teach us. Doty gives a look at the vulnerability of dogs, how they rely on us, & the positive outlook they bring, & their gift of unconditional love. Dog Years is not sentimental though. It is mournfully & movingly affecting. We all will have to deal with loss at some point. This book will help just a little bit.

The very handsome Doty’s writing has been honored by the National Book Critics Circle Award, PEN Award, LA Times Book Prize, Lambda Literary Award & T.S. Eliot Prize. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment For The Arts, & Merrill Foundation.

“To be human is probably to be conscious of time in a way that dogs are free of , but I love to, at least for a little while, slip that harness & let myself go into the edgeless world of animal time! That’s probably an aspect of the relationship between lyric poets & people we term “insane”, we both lose our identities on a regular basis.”

Doty is divorced from writer Paul Lisicky. They were together for 15 years. He now lives with Alexander Hadel in NYC & East Hampton. He has a new volume of poems, Deep Lane, to be published this fall.

Doty & I are the same age, along with a love of men & dogs, we are both bloggers. Believe me, I don’t mean to imply that we are in the same company. Now I must sign off. Lulu & Junior are waiting for their morning walk.

Here’s the “proof” you’ve been waiting for! NASA‘s Curiosity Rover took an image of Mars and captured a shape that looks a LOT like ghost lady walking on the planet’s surface. Maybe it’s a ghost of Martian woman in a robe – perhaps it’s a sculpture left over from a once great society –maybe it’s just a rock? Surely, the resemblance correlates to one’s desire to believe in life on Mars. (Don’t call me Shirley…)

Not to be judgmental but I would imagine if you are getting a tattoo of your rock idol or fave star, the intention MIGHT be for them to be somewhat recognizable, no? But “art” is subjective, so you be the judge and jury here. For me, it’s an open and shut case. This ink stinks.

#DragHerstory: All Aboard the S.S. Wigstock! Lady Bunny & Crew Sets Sail August 16 in NYC

WIGSTOCKThe-CruiseGETOUTMAGfullpageFINAL2FLATWEB

On August 16th, the old Wigstock gang will take over Michael Fesco’s Sea Tea for a 4-hour cruise to recreate the past wiggy fun from Wigstock’s past. The Lady Bunny will host, emcee and perform, along with many of the event’s most celebrated acts.

It’s been over more than a decade since the last Wigstock was held. The legendary Labor Day bash attracted 30,000 revelers at it’s height and became the subject of the film Wigstock: The Movie in 1995. But after 20+ years of organizers Lady Bunny and Scott Lifshutz took a L O N G break.

Now Downtown legends Sister Dimension, HRH Princess Diandra, Flotilla Debarge, Sweetie, Sugga Pie Koko, David Ilku and Ffloyd with DJ Johnny Dynell (of Jackie 60 fame) will bring back that 90s club attitude from when Wigstock was at it’s peak. Get ready to get down to the sounds of CeCe Peniston, Ultra Nate, Crystal Waters and the sounds of the the NYC 90s.

Linda Simpson will show her 90s Drag Explosion photo exhibit slide show with her non-stop, running commentary of Drag Herstory. According to Bunny;

“It’s basically a retelling of every time Linda was sober enough to pull out a camera and snap it during her My Comrade days with pics of every queen from RuPaul to trans model Page…”

So, why revive a Wigstock-themed event now? Bunny says:

“Someone recently sent me an photo spread from the UK’s Guardian featuring Michael James O’Brien’s shots from Wigstock during the 90s, calling it ‘New York’s hair-raising 90s drag scene.’ It made me nostalgic, just as people are nostalgic for clubs which don’t only play top 40 tunes and drag acts which focus more on talent than on contouring ability. Then I got wind of a new Wigstock party in South Africa in addition to other annual events in Tel Aviv, Sweden and Melbourne, Australia and had to ask myself ‘Why should everyone else have all the fun?’ and ‘How much should I sue for?’

Everyone is always telling me ‘Bring back Wigstock!’ so this Sea Tea cruise will test the waters, literally, and relive the party on a smaller scale. This may lead to other full-scale Wigstock festivals in the future. I’ve performed on Michael Fesco’s Sea Tea in the past and this boat ride seems like the perfect way to reunite the crazy crew of very gifted performers. And to show that the Wigstock vibe is unsinkable! This cruise offers a unique opportunity to relive one of the Village’s maddest moments, since many considered Wigstock to be a hipper version of gay pride day for decades.”

The Hornblower boards at 6PM promptly, sails at 7:30PM and is back on the dock at 10PM. It departs from Pier 40 near Christopher Street. Girls please, wear wedges or sensible heels! Rock The Boat is NOT just a song and this ride is NOT suited to spikes!” Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at Pier 40 the day of (if still available) It’s 21 and over only. There’s no VIP nothin’ and no bottle service, but the ticket includes a buffet dinner with two decks of fun. DJ Johnny Dynell on one and DC’s Ed Bailey on another. With a full on Wigstock production featuring all of the above. I’m going and I’ll give Wow readers a full report, but it ain’t the same as being there. Don’t miss the boat on this one, kids. Get your tickets here.

James Franco to Play Twins In ’70s-era Porn-Themed HBO Series

This could be interesting: Variety has announced that HBO  ordered a pilot from The Wire creator David SimonThe Deuce will be a period drama about the porn industry in the ’70s and ’80s, with James Franco attached to star and exec produce.

The Deuce set in the Times Square demimonde of the 1970s and 1980s, explores the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York, looking into the rough-and-tumble world of midtown Manhattan until the rise of HIV, the violence of the cocaine epidemic and the renewed real estate market all ended the bawdy turbulence. The project is partly inspired by the career of twin brothers who were players in the Times Square world and became fronts for mob control of the volatile and lucrative sex industry.

Franco will play both twins, in addition to co-producing the series.

Sorry to be a bummer but, did you know that as of 2015, over 650,000 people have died of AIDS in the U.S.. Thirty plus years ago AIDS hit the creative community as writer Simon Doonan says in his 2013 book The Asylum: A Collage of Couture Reminiscences … and Hysteria “like a sledgehammer”. As he puts it;

“To those of you who were not around, I can only say this: You have no idea how lucky you are.

One after another, the brightest and boldest succumbed to this horrifying disease. Our creative pals —some famous, some infamous, most unknown and just starting to hit their stride— perished after being unwittingly infected by the disease of the century. Many died agonizing deaths in the hallways of hospitals without hope or familial support. Back then, in the early days, AIDS really was just like a medieval plague. ‘Who is next?’ was the question on all our lips.

Patrick Kelly, Angel Estrada, Isaia, Adrian Cartmell, Clovis Ruffin, Halston and so many more. AIDS decimated a broad spectrum of the fashion universe. Antonio Lopez and Juan Ramos, Tina Chow, Robert Rose, Peter Lester, Tim Hawkins, Sergio Galeotti, Robert Hayes and Laughlin Barker.

Photographers too: David Seidner, Barry McKinley, Tony Viramontes, Herb Ritts, Bill King, Steven Arnold, Stevie Hughes, Kenneth McGowan and Doug Coder.

And so many of my window-dresser pals: Bob Currie, Michael Cipriano, Cliff Murphy, Colin Burch, Bob Benzio, Stephen Di Petrie, Talmadge the one-namer, and so many more.

These names are just the tip of the iceberg. I cannot list everyone. This book would turn into War and Peace.”

The fashion industry was one of the first to bring attention to the crisis, but as Simon says;

“fund-raising is one thing, and remembrance is another.

When I saw how beautifully the victims of 9/11 were memorialized, I could not help but think also of my fallen heroes. I thought of the bright lights of fashion who were cruelly snuffed out in the 1980s.

And I thought about how important it is for us to keep the flame burning for our friends who slipped away from us over a quarter of a century ago, not just for ourselves, but also for the upcoming generation, many of whom were not even born in 1981.

Upcoming generations need to know that Perry Ellis was a real person, not just a brand name, a beautiful, generous man with long hair and a uniquely poetic vision.

They should know that Moschino is not just a made-up name on a label in the neck of a random frock. Franco Moschino was a true innovator, an Italian surrealist with a wicked wit.

We need to share our memories of talented and inspirational eccentrics like Klaus Nomi, Tommy Rubnitz, Leigh Bowery, Way Bandy and Ricky Wilson of the B-52s. And we need to share the magic and the bravado and the positivity of great fashion designers like Willi Smith.”

And so many more. Those of us who lived through the war and those who weren’t even born yet, should not forget. (via Slate)

Winona Ryder has echoed what Michael Keaton and Tim Burton have said before; a Beetlejuice sequel is in the works. On last night’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, the actress confirmed a follow-up to the 1988 film is happening.

“Um, I think I can confirm it, because Tim Burton did this interview — like, it was very hush hush, top secret … and then he was doing some press for Big Eyes and he did an on-camera interview and he said, ‘Oh yeah we’re doing it and Winona’s going to be in it,’ and I was like [shocked face].”

In December, Burton said;

“There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever… I miss that character. There’s something that’s cathartic and amazing about it. I think it’s closer than ever.”

Taylor Swift Is Buying a 16th Century Scottish Castle to be Closer to Calvin Harris Because of Course She Is

Remember the time bunny-boiler Taylor Swift bought the house across the street from her jailbait boyfriend Conor Kennedy? Remember how well THAT worked out for her? Well, she’s at it again. The Daily Mail is reporting that Tay-Tay has her heart set on buying the $7million Tower of Lethendy, a Scottish Baronial manor house which dates back to 1570, so she can have a base close to boyfriend Calvin Harris‘ family.

Tower of Lethendy is certainly a home fit for the pop superstar, boasting eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms in the main house – a Scottish Baronial manor house which dates back to 1570 – as well as two gate lodges and two staff cottages.

Currently owned by a Canadian family, the interior of the mansion was given a huge overhaul twenty years ago with the estate used as a wedding and holiday venue.

There are multiple reception rooms including a library with bespoke oak shelves, a china room and a huge kitchen, perfect for Taylor who loves to post photos of her celeb-filled baking parties on Instagram.

Upstairs, the master bedroom suite includes a huge bedroom, a sitting room, shower room, bathroom and a vast dressing room and walk-in closet to house the superstar’s designer gowns.

The estate also includes its own 18-hole golf course, heated swimming pool and tennis courts across the 40-acre site.

As well as the beautiful private grounds, the castle is surrounded by stunning Perthshire countryside, with the Grampian Mountains to the north

I mean, it’s lovely and all, but let’s be real: It doesn’t even have a moat, so WHATEVER. Pass! Also, they haven’t even been dating a year yet, so I think Little Miss Bad Blood might be jumping the gun YET AGAIN.

Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry both didn’t make the guest list for Jennifer Aniston‘s surprise wedding to Justin Theroux. LeBlanc, 48, told People on yesterday at an event in L.A.;

“I think they’re a great couple. I think she’s happy. And that’s all I care about is that Jen’s happy. If she wanted me there, I would have been there.”

He missed her big day TWICE, too.

“I missed when she married Brad [Pitt]. I was in Austria working. She called me, and she was like, ‘You’re really not coming to my wedding?’ And I was like, ‘I asked them if they could change the schedule. I would fly and clap and fly out.’ And they said, ‘We can’t do it. It’s too tight.’ It was a small-budget movie in Austria you’ve never heard of. Probably should have left anyway, but s— happens. What are you going to do?”

Perry, 45, also wished the couple well;

“It was a surprise to me as well. They’re a lovely couple, and I’m happy for them.

I wasn’t invited. So what can you do?”

Jen’s other Friends stars Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow did attend last Wednesday’s nuptials. This happens to everybody with weddings and “work friends”… though usually the word “Friends” isn’t the name of the business. (via People)

Axe-Wielding Clown Attacks North Carolina Woman

Picture it: 4:30AM, you hear a noise. You get out of bed, creep downstairs to investigate, and what do you find? A CLOWN WITH A FUCKING AXE! Whaaaaaat? NOOOOOO. He chases you. You run. He swings the axe. He misses. He swings again. And again and again. You scuffle. In your blind panic you reach out, you rip off the mask…. and you RECOGNIZE HIM AS AN ACQUANTANCE? What the fuck is going on? He collects himself, he grabs the mask and the axe and runs off.

That’s what authorities say happened to a North Carolina woman last night. After telling the officers what happened, the woman decided to go to a judge and request an arrest warrant for her acquaintance.

Police have not released the suspect’s name and a motive for the attack was not immediately clear.

Movie deal pending. (via HuffPo)

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now the Fantastic Four movie just tanked, taking only $26.2m in the wake of poor reviews and audience derision.

If, however, you are absolutely bound and determined to watch a Fantastic Four movie, might I suggest THIS never-released 1994 ultra-low budget version by Roger Corman? Says Comicbook.com: “The infamous film was so cheesy, under-budgeted, and just plain bad, that Marvel prevented it from ever reaching movie theaters. But the Internet being the treasure chest that it is, unearthed, and posted the entire ninety-minute spectacle for fans’ streaming (dis)pleasure.”

Watch it in all its camp glory below. It’s GOT to be better than the Trank version.

No, as far as we know, this isn’t a gay elephant, but we wanted to get your attention on World Elephant Day. In 2012, the inaugural World Elephant Day was launched to bring attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants. The elephant is loved, revered and respected by people and cultures around the world, yet we balance on the brink of seeing the last of this magnificent creature. Vanity Fair‘s Graydon Carter said;

“We admire elephants in part because they demonstrate what we consider the finest human traits: empathy, self-awareness, and social intelligence. But the way we treat them puts on display the very worst of human behavior.”

The escalation of poaching, habitat loss, human-elephant conflict and mistreatment in captivity are just some of the threats to both African and Asian elephants. Working towards better protection for wild elephants, improving enforcement policies to prevent the illegal poaching and trade of ivory, conserving elephant habitats, better treatment for captive elephants and, when appropriate, reintroducing captive elephants into natural, protected sanctuaries are the goals that numerous elephant conservation organizations are focusing on around the world.

Carl Philip, the Crown Prince of Sweden, was just voted onto the International Best Dressed List, something that should have happened YEARS ago, if you asked me. For those of you who don’t follow the Swedish royal family with the same passion as I do, allow me to introduce you to the stunning young hunk. Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland, is the only son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, and third in the line of succession, after his older sister, Crown Princess Victoria, and his niece and goddaughter Princess Estelle. That means he doesn’t have a chance in hell of being king so he can spend his time just looking good – dressing in tuxedos with sashes and whatnot – and being all butch. He races, he yachts, he skis… He’s just the MOST MANLY MAN OF ALL TIME. Well, just look at him!
