Empire's gay story line on FOX caused controversy and helped it's ratings soar

Empire’s gay story line on FOX caused controversy and helped it’s ratings soar

ew-cover-1139_300

Move over Logo and Bravo, there are gayer networks moving’ on up. GLAAD has released the ninth—and final—edition of their Network Responsibility Index (NRI). This rates TV networks on the quality –and quantity– of representation by the LGBT community.

FOX was one of two networks —and the only broadcast network— to get the grade of “Excellent” with 45.4 percent of LGBT-inclusive original programming hours. That’s THE highest % GLAAD has ever tracked for a broadcast network. The network, in total, was up 9 percent from last year. ABC Family is #1 with 74 %.

Shows like Glee, Empire and How to Get Away With Murder created shows that both featured LGBT-inclusive characters and were cast with a high number of people of color within that community. GLAAD CEO & President Sarah Kate Ellis said;

“This milestone highlights real change across the media landscape—especially considering that the network received a “Failing” grade in the NRI’s first two editions.”

ABC, CW, FX, HBO, MTV and Showtime received a grade of “good.” CBS, NBC, TLC, TNT, and USA were bestowed an “adequate” rating while A&E and History, which had 0% representation, received a “failing” grade.

Sarah Kate Ellis said;

“GLAAD’s Network Responsibility Index has helped reshape the television landscape, inspiring LGBT characters and storylines that move acceptance forward. As representations of LGBT people in the media continue to rise in number, pushing television networks to make those representations more diverse is more crucial than ever. This requires a different set of tools than the NRI provides, and as such GLAAD will shift focus to its annual TV diversity and transgender reports.”

Out of 362 hours of original programming, History failed to feature a single LGBT impression. GLAAD says that The History’s Channel’s content may not easily lend itself to diverse storylines, they are urging the cable network to expand into historical-based or period dramas that also include LGBT characters.

Broadcast Networks:

FOX: 45%, up from 36%

THE CW: 45%, up from 33%

ABC: 32%, down from 34%

NBC: 28%, down from 37%

CBS: 27%, down from 28%

ABC Family's “The Fosters,” is about a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms

ABC Family’s “The Fosters,” is about a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms

Cable Networks:

ABC FAMILY: 74%, up from 42%

FC: 54%, up from 49%

SHOWTIME: 41%, up from 34%

HBO: 31%, same as previous year

MTV: 30%, down from 49%

USA: 23%, up from 17%

TNT: 19%, up from 9%

TLC: 18%, up from 17%

A&E: 8%, up from 6%

HISTORY: 0%, same as previous year

This is GLAAD’s last year for the Network Responsibility Index. Now they will focus on their “Where We Are On TV Report,” which works to increase the diversity of LGBT images on TV, as well as its film-focused “Studio Responsibility Index” and “Transgender Images on TV” reports. James Yates and William Smith, Jr. sued Kim Davis for being refused a marriage license SIX TIMES since July. They also asked the Rowan County Attorney to file a charge of official misconduct against Davis. This morning, just after 8:00 AM, the couple, together nine years, finally were able to obtain a marriage license, becoming the first couple — same-sex or different-sex — to do so in Rowan County since the Supreme Court ruled same-sex couples have a civil right to marriage. Kinda makes you teary, huh? Couldn’t be happier for these two. So is Twitter.

Man’s Enormous 19-Inch Penis Is RUINING HIS LIFE!

Step aside, Jonah Falcon! There’s a new record-holding giant weiner in town: Roberto Esquivel Cabrera of Saltillo, Mexico whose penis is reportedly 48.2 centimeters (nearly 19 inches) long and the tip’s circumference is 25 centimeters (nearly 10 inches) – and, poor thing, it’s making him MISERABLE.

“Look where it is, it goes far below the knees,” Mr Cabrera sobbed to the press this past weekens. “I cannot do anything, I cannot work, and I am disabled so I want authorities to declare me as a disabled person and give me support.”

His social life is dismal as well, he says as women are too scared to be with him, so he had never had a long-term girlfriend, let alone a wife. (Although I’m sure he’s getting plenty of offers from the boys right about now…)

Saya AustralianNews.com:

In 2011 Mr Cabrera was deported from US to Saltillo in the north-eastern Mexican state of Coahuila, where he lives alone in a room given to him by his brothers. He survives on social assistance and scavenges for food and materials on waste dumps. He has no friends and says people “shun” him wherever he goes.

Before his record was made official, Mr Cabrera had a medical examination and X-ray of his phallus to support his application for disability. Doctors at a medical institution in Saltillo have confirmed the scan is genuine, The Mirror reported.

Some experts have suggested Mr Cabrera consider a shaft reduction operation but it is not clear what his thoughts are on the subject.

The previous record holder for penis length was an American called Johan Falcon, whose 13.38 inch manhood (34cm) was dwarfed by Mr Cabrera’s.

And here’s some interesting food for thought, to help you get a visual on the size of his dong: At 19 inches, Roberto’s penis is two-inches shorter than the world’s smallest man! Mr Cabrera’s story and struggle for help is to be published in a book called El Sordido Pudor, which translates as “Sordid Shyness”.

UPDATE: The king cobra is STILL on the loose. I repeat! STILL ON THE LAM!

I hope all our Orlando queens are accounted for down in Orlando, FL! Roxxxy Andrews, you coo? Ginger Minj, you good? Anyone got eyes on Tyra Sanchez?! Hide yo wife! Hide yo kids! Hide yo husbands! There is a damn king cobra on the loose in Orlando. The eight foot long, green and yellow snake escaped from it’s ‘possibly mesh and glass’ cage in it’s owner’s home sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The Orlando Sentinel spoke to Carl Barden who owns the Reptile Discovery Center and has been extracting venom from king cobras for over 20, and he says the snakes are “shy elusive animals” and that “the chances of that snake actually biting someone are extremely remote.” He also said there was plenty of king cobra anti-venom in Central Florida. A local elementary school isn’t taking any chances and is keeping all kids inside today while the hunt for the missing snake continues. Although officials haven’t revealed who owns the home, property records show that Mike Kennedy, who’s know for Airplane Repo on the Discovery Channel, owns it with his wife Valerie. I know I’d be inside today because I just CAN’T with king cobras.

September 5, 1912John Cage:

“I can’t understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I’m frightened of the old ones.”

John Milton Cage was a most important American experimental music composer, writer, Performance & visual artist. His most famous & controversial musical composition is the 1952 piece 4’33”, whose 3 movements are performed without playing a single note. Pronounced “4 minutes 33 seconds”, it is a composition for any instrument, or combination of instruments. The score instructs the performer not to play the instrument during the entire duration of the piece. Cage intended 4’33’’ to consist of the sounds of the environment that the listeners hear while it is being performed. Get it?

Cage was a pioneer of what he called “chance music”, music where some elements are left to be decided simply by chance. He is also known for his unconventional use of musical instruments & his early use of electronic music. Cage is one of the most important composers of his era, especially for asking questions about the very definition of music.

Along with painters Robert Rauschenberg & Jasper Johns, partners in life, Cage & his own partner in life & in art, choreographer Merce Cunningham, became a part of a circle of fascinating young gay artists whose ideas & execution challenged the macho Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollack who dominated the 1950s NYC art scene. They developed an alternative creative & very gay spirit that became the trademark of Post-Modern Art.

cage 3

Cage on left with Cunningham & Robert Rauschenberg

Cage pushed the boundaries of the definition of music, experimenting with sound, environment & audience perception. His work influenced music, painting, dance, performance art & poetry in the last half of the 20th century.

Cage was born in LA, the son of an inventor. Young Cage held a yearning for innovation & originality, qualities that became the hallmarks of his entire career.

In 1930, after 2 years at Pomona College, Cage left for a less traditional education in Europe. He chose Paris, & spent 18 months painting, writing poetry & composing music, before returning to California to focus on music.

From 1932-1936, Cage studied composition with the famous modernist, Arnold Schoenberg. Schoenberg was a gay Austrian Jew who fled those nasty Nazis for the USA,. Schoenberg declared the young Cage: “…is not a composer, but an inventor of genius.”

In 1937, Cage took a job as a dance accompanist while taking classes at The Cornish School Of The Arts in Seattle, where he met student Merce Cunningham. During the Seattle years, Cage organized an all-percussion band, collected unusual instruments & explored the Pacific Northwest.

Cage & Cunningham’s musical & romantic partnership would last 54 years until Cage left this world in 1992. Together & apart, the couple changed the relationship of music to dance.  Cage served music director of Cunningham’s company &, for many years, its manager, main fundraiser, cook, company philosopher, morale-booster & liaison between the introverted choreographer & the dancers.

In 1938, Cage began to experiment with pieces for the prepared piano, a piano he created with objects placed on & between the strings to alter sound. He also used record players & phonographs, kitchen appliances, kiddie toys, & flower pots as instruments. He actually received a review in The NY Times that said:

“Mr. Cage’s music had an inescapable resemblance to the meaningless sounds made by children amusing themselves by banging on tin pans & other resonant kitchen utensils.”

In Water Music (1952), Cage had a pianist pour water from one pot into another, and perform with a whistle & a deck of cards. Critics & audiences of traditional music were not amused.

In the 1940’s, Cage continued to pursue unorthodox musical techniques. He was fascinated with Zen Buddhism which led him to the notion of chance music. Based on the I Ching, the Zen book of changes, Cage created compositions solely by chance.

Cage worked best when he would compose & collaborate with other artists. In his later years, he focused exclusively with electronic music, sometimes using radios, & holding “Happenings,” pieces that are mostly unwritten, except for timed intervals in which a note, a sound, or silence is scheduled.

Cage’s work & life had a huge impact on Pop Art, Modern Minimalism, Performance Art, Installation Art, Process Art, Design & Pop Music. The late 20th century artists that created & worked with those forms,  had all  come in contact with Cage at some point in the 1950s. He is an influence on pop figures: Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, Phillip Glass, Brian Eno, David Bowie & David Byrne. The Beatles’ song A Day In The Life was inspired by Lennon & McCartney’s time spent hanging out with Cage in the 1960s.

Cage was also a writer, philosopher, visual & performance artist. He was a self-taught expert on mushrooms. Early in his career, he made a living gathering mushrooms in the country & selling them to gourmet restaurants in NYC, including The Four Seasons. Cage said that mushrooms reminded him of the ephemeral nature of life.  He was co-founder of the NY Mycological Society, dedicated to the study, collection & appreciation of mushrooms & fungi. I can totally dig it.

Cage:

“That’s one of the beautiful things about hunting mushrooms, they grow up & they’re fresh at just a particular moment, & our lives are actually characterized by moments.”

Cage insisted that music is everywhere in the ordinary moments of our lives. We just have to learn to hear it. Cage’s lasting influence is in his ideas about the artistic freedom that comes with breaking the rules. I couldn’t agree more.

Cage left this world in August 1992, taken by a stroke at 79 years old in the NYC home he shared with Cunningham. Cunningham joined his partner in summer 2009. Theirs is one of the great love stories.

Cage’s work remains thought provoking, continues to spur arguments, & still spreads mischief. People who knew him have told me he was warm & modest.

“I like everything.”

Jim Brofft

Jim Brofft

You’ve seem the memes of clerk Kim Davis, mainly about her dowdy appearance and the fact that she OBVIOUSLY doesn’t know any gay people. Well, the owner of Jim Brofft Salon Central in Cincinnati, has issued an offer to color, cut and style—for free—the hair of Ms. Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who was jailed on Thursday for contempt of court after she refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Brofft says;

“She could really use a boost in color and a flattering cut. God gave her Beelzebub-brown hair. I can give it shape. Pizazz. Highlights!”

Brofft said that an appointment for his services, gratis, would give Davis exposure to a gay person in a relaxed, non-contentious environment…

“Maybe after a hour with me in her jail cell she will see that homosexuals are just like everyone else, except we tend to be better at fixing problem hair.”

Regarding Davis’s current hair style, Brofft repeated Davis’ own quote about gay marriage:

“It’s not of God.”

Why give a freebie to a woman who refused her governmental duty to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples? Brofft explained that compassion and communication are the best ways to bridge the gap.

“I believe in the transformative power of great style. Kim will look in the mirror after a hair makeover and see not only a more beautiful woman, but perhaps one who can open her heart and accept that gay people deserve to love and marry…just as she loved and married each of her four husbands.”

Bless you, Jim –are doing God’s work!

Today is World Beard Day, and The Wow Reports asks the musical question,

“Is ANY man sexier with a beard?”

Well, if you’re already good-looking, it works. If you have less than movie-star looks, it adds a “manly dude” vibe to almost anybody. It’s not EVERYONE’S cup of tea, to be sure, but in that case of these leading men, that basement pump better be in working order.

#BornThisDay: Social Reformer, Jane Addams

addams

August 6, 1860Jane Addams, just in time for Labor Day:

“Unless our conception of patriotism is progressive, it cannot hope to embody the real affection and the real interest of the nation.”

When Jane Addams’ travels took her away from her special close companion, Mary Rozet Smith, she took along a painting of Smith, even though the portrait was kept in a rather bulky piece of luggage.

Addams was a brilliant & an unusually accomplished gay woman for her era. She graduated from Rockford Female Seminary in 1881. She founded Chicago‘s Hull House in 1898, along with Rockford classmate Ellen Gates Star. Hull House was an experimental model of reform to help provide for the neighborhood’s neediest residents. Hull House sought to reduce poverty by offering social services & education to the poor immigrants & laborers of working-class Chicago. They had day-care for children of working mothers, an art gallery, libraries, music & art classes, & an employment counseling. Hull House served over 2,000 residents every week & eventually included a book bindery, gymnasium, swimming pool, residence for working women, theater, labor museum, & a meeting place for trade unions.

Much of the early financial support came from Addams’ very intimate special friend, Smith, one of the richest women in the USA. Addams & Smith traveled together often. Addams would demand a hotel featuring a double bed, instead of a pair of singles. They also shared Smith’s summer home in Bar Harbor, Maine. They were a couple until Smith checked out for good in 1933.

As an educated woman with a free spirit, along with the free time to pursue her own interests, Addams decided to dedicate her life to providing for the welfare of women & children in Chicago, & in locking in legislation for their protection. Addams was also involved in other social issues. Her social reform efforts included: housing for the poor, sanitation issues, factory inspections, immigrant rights, pacifism, & the 8-hour workday.

Addams publicly supported the candidacy of attorney Pearl Hart, a champion of juvenile & women’s court cases. Hart would later become a well-known civil rights attorney in the McCarthy era & a staunch supporter of Gay Rights.

Addams was a pacifist before WW I. She spoke out against Republican President William McKinley‘s decision to go to war after the sinking of the battleship Maine. In 1899, Addams joined Mark Twain, Chicago attorney Clarence Darrow & the gay novelist Henry Blake Fuller in forming the Anti-Imperialist League to protest the war in Cuba & the Philippines. She viewed the USA’s involvement as a “murderous extension of American Capitalism”. One of those trouble making lesbians, Addams was attacked by right-wingers for her public opposition to the war & was expelled from the Daughters Of The American Revolution for her position.

She was a charter member of the National Consumers League, NAACP, American Civil Liberties Union.

Addams lived a life of commitment to making a difference in the lives of the disenfranchised. She received many honors during her lifetime, including the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize, the first American woman to receive the prize.

Addams left this world in 1935, just days after attending a celebratory dinner hosted by another woman who preferred to share her life with a special female companion, Eleanor Roosevelt.

Don’t you think the life of Jane Addams would make an especially fine film? I think it should be one of those terrific HBO event movies, maybe the team that brought us the powerful The Normal Heart (2014), or the sublime Angels In America. Or maybe, having Angelina Jolie-Pitt star as Addams, write & direct, getting the green-light for the project after she signs husband Brad to play Eleanor Roosevelt after I suddenly become unavailable for the role.

“The essence of immorality is the tendency to make an exception of myself.”

Caitlyn Jenner‘s very first post-transition televised interview will air on Ellen this Tuesday, September 8. In this clip, DeGeneres questions Jenner about her “Republican” views, and how she can stand by a party that actively campaigns against issues that are important to her, both as a woman and a trans person. She answers;

“At first, I was not for it. I mean, I thought, ‘I’m a traditionalist.’ … I mean, I kind of like tradition, and it’s always been a man and a woman. And I’m thinking, ‘I don’t quite get it.’”

Jenner goes on to say that she’s changed her stance on the subject of same-sex marriage, claiming that now she…

“doesn’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.”

and “if that word ‘marriage’ is really, really that important to you, I can go with it.”

Ellen then challenges her on not really being on board with the issue, to which Jenner responds that she is now because it’s going to be the “law of the land.”

Great get. This will be THE most discussed TV appearance come Tuesday afternoon, unless Trump decides to get a slice of pizza. Watch.

Yes, Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett will play comedy icon Lucille Ball in a biopic (hopefully) written by Aaron Sorkin. Ball’s marriage to Desi Arnaz, her husband, business partner and costar on I Love Lucy will be the film’s focus. After they split, Ball bought Arnaz’s share of Desilu Productions, which made her the first woman ever to run a major production company on her own. The couple’s children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz, Jr, will both serve as producers.

Sorkin, who has written biopics of both Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, was immediately the target of criticism over the project. He’s often been called out for not writing well-rounded female characters. Sorkin once said of Blanchett that she didn’t have as much “difficulty” winning her Oscar than the men who were nominated in that year. E! News reports that the studio wants him for the project, but he hasn’t written a word or officially signed on. Reps for either Blanchett and Sorkin haven not yet commented, but the project is major Oscar bait. She’s already been Katherine Hepburn as well as Bob Dylan, so, with the right makeup, Blanchett can play ANYONE.
