As the temperatures dip across the country, people are apt to go out exploring their neighborhood ponds and reservoirs. That’s A TERRIBLE IDEA because the cold weather hasn’t been around long enough to create ice strong enough to walk on. The general rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t venture out onto clear ice that is less than 2 inches thick. Even safer is 4 inches. The Art of Manliness has an illustrated guide to surviving a fall through the ice that EVERYONE needs to read. Click to enlarge.
When I was a little, a neighbor boy fell through the ice and drown. The current dragged him away from the hole he fell in, and his family could see him under the ice, pounding on it to escape. They couldn’t do anything. I still have nightmares about that TO THIS DAY. Ice is no joke, yo. If you know you’ll be on ice, it’s a good idea to carry rescue ice picks with you. They’re cheap, and could make the difference between life and death. You can also make your own with a couple nails and dowels.
